What We Do

Summer Academic Enrichment Camps

Summer Academic Enrichment Camps support underachieving students by helping them to better understand their learning challenges and providing them with tools to make learning easier and more fun.

Hawaii Learning Resource offers two Summer Academic Enrichment Camps for students entering grades 2 to 8 who are struggling in school.  The goal of the Camps, created in partnership with Assets School, is to provide students with a fun, hands-on learning experience designed to increase confidence in their ability to learn, provide an opportunity to improve learning and social skills, and better understand their strengths and interests.

Parents receive an informal assessment outlining their child’s unique learning style and strategies to help the learning process.

The two-week day camps are held in June and July.  The Summer Spy Academy, for students entering grades 2 to 6, provides an emphasis on observation, focus, and listening.  The Game of Life session, targets students entering grades 6 to 8 and provides project-based life lessons designed to increase group interaction skills.  For more information about upcoming Summer Academic Enrichment Camps, please contact Toni Stylos at tstylos@hawaiilearningresource.org.

Teacher Professional Development

Teacher Professional Development is provided to educators who participate in our Summer Academic Enrichment Camps.  Using an apprentice-style approach, teachers receive training in differentiated instruction which is a process of teaching and learning for students of differing abilities in the same class.  The goal is to help teachers help all students in their classroom, especially diverse learners.

This method of teaching requires educators to be flexible in their approach to teaching by adjusting the curriculum and how they present information to students, and gives students options for taking in information and making sense of ideas. Educators can use this method of teaching to assist students in the learning process and help more students experience success.

Community Education Program

Community Education Workshops bring education professionals to North Hawaii to provide information, resources, and support to families and educators of diverse learners.  Workshops aim to provide participants with a better understanding of a student’s learning challenges and strategies to assist their learning at home and at school.  The free Community Education Workshops are held monthly from September through April, except in December.  To receive notification on upcoming workshops, please email Hawaii Learning Resource at info@hawaiilearningresource.org.

The Community Education Program aims to provide families and educators of gifted and struggling students with support and a better understanding of the child’s learning challenges, and strategies to assist their learning at home and at school.

Referrals for Student Assessments

Hawaii Learning Resource provides referrals to All Kinds of Minds trained professionals who use a strengths-based approach to assess and guide struggling students.  The assessment identifies students’ strengths and interests and specific breakdowns in learning.  A detailed report and demystification meeting provides students and their families with recommended strategies to strengthen the student’s strengths and reduce their learning challenges.

For referral contact information, please call Hawaii Learning Resource at (808) 885-9318, or email us at info@hawaiilearningresource.org.
