HLR is pleased to offer a free educator workshop presented by Kavita Rao, PhD, University of Hawaii at Manoa. Universal Design for Learning: Strategies and Tools to Engage Diverse Learners will be held Saturday, March 9, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Kanu o ka ‘Aina New Century Public Charter School, 64-1043 Hi’iaka Street in Waimea.
The workshop will explore how educators can use “everyday technologies” such as laptops and tablets to create multimedia projects that support academic, social and behavioral goals. A review of the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework will be provided including practical ideas for designing instruction for the diverse learners in the classroom. A discussion of UDL-based instructional strategies will be provided and participants will explore resources that are helpful for a range of students. Two simple hands-on technology projects practicing UDL strategies will be created that can be used with students in the regular classroom.
Kavita Rao is an Assistant Professor in the College of Education, Department of Education. Kavita teaches courses on educational and assistive technologies and has been a teacher trainer for over 15 years working with teachers to integrate creative and engaging uses of technology and multimedia into the classrooms to support the needs of students receiving special education services and English language learners.
