Hawaii Learning Resource will participate in the 34th annual Hawai’i Hotel & Lodging Association Visitor Industry Charity Walk Saturday, May 12, 2012

We hope you will walk on behalf of Hawaii Learning Resource.

The amount of the grant we receive is directly related to the number of participants walking on our behalf. Look for our Aid Station on the course with cookies generously donated from Mrs. Barry’s Kona Cookies.

WHEN: Saturday, May 12, 2012.

WALK START & FINISH: Queen’s Market Place, Waikoloa Beach Resort

REGISTRATION: 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.

START TIME: Runners at 6:30 a.m. Walkers at 7:00 a.m.

DISTANCE: 4 miles

THE CHARITY WALK:  Walkers present original of the walk form at the CHARITY WALK.  Be sure to write Hawaii Learning Resource in the Organization section of your form to walk on our behalf. A minimum donation of $35.00 (tax deductible) per walker is required. Walkers may sign up as many sponsors as they like and collect donations prior to the walk to submit during registration. Walker may also sponsor themselves.

WHO MAY WALK: The Hawai‘i Lodging & Tourism Association invites everyone of every age to walk. Those under 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult and walkers under the age of 18 must have this application signed by a parent or guardian. All walkers should have minimum donations regardless of age (see front of form). Please note that ALL pets are NOT allowed on the Charity Walk.

Think-Alouds have been described as “eavesdropping on someone’s thinking.” With this strategy, teachers verbalize aloud while reading a selection orally. Their verbalizations include describing things they’re doing as they read to monitor their comprehension. The purpose of the think-aloud strategy is to model for students how skilled readers construct meaning from a text.

Why use think-alouds?

• It helps students learn to monitor their thinking as they read and improves their comprehension.
• It teaches students to re-read a sentence, read ahead to clarify, and/or look for context clues to make sense of what they read.
• It slows down the reading process and allows students to monitor their understanding of a text.

Jyo Bridgewater, K-8 Principal from Assets School, and Judy Stevenson, a Waimea based Academic Coach, will present the workshop.  Participants will learn how to weave learning into fun family times, activities to help discover and develop your child’s strengths, and opportunities to improve social skills through activities that are both educational and fun.

This free workshop is made possible through generous grant funding from the Hawaii Hotel Industry Foundation and the Rotary Club of North Hawaii.

Darlene Robertson, Director of Professional Program Development for Assets School, will facilitate both workshops.  Assets School, located in Honolulu, is a leader in effective education of both gifted and/or dyslexic students and is known for innovative teaching practices.

Hawaii Learning Resource has received two grants to support our programs for diverse learners.  A $3,000 grant from the West Hawaii Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation was received to support our summer 2012 Academic Enrichment Camps which will be held in Waimea at Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s Village Campus.  We are also pleased to announce a $1,000 grant from the Rotary Club of North Hawaii to support our Community Education Workshops.  The workshops are provided free to the community and offer information and strategies to help local students, their families, and their teachers.  Hawaii Learning Resource is grateful for the support of these partners who enable us to continue our important programs to support diverse learners in our community.
